Working group for the management and maintenance of SBN Authority File. Places

A Working group for the management and maintenance of SBN Authority File. Places has been established on 9 November 2016. The work of this Group, coordinated by the ICCU, is focused on the control and maintenance of the archive of authority records for places of printing, publication, etc., for pre-1831 bibliographic records. Its activity involves two processes:

  • editing SBN data by crossing out duplicates, correcting mistaken descriptions, standardising forms of place names, creating variant forms, drawing up information notes, and adding bibliographic references. The guidelines for such work are available through the Guidelines for cataloguing in SBN. Rules for the treatment of information and data shared among all the types of material, Authority-Places (in Italian). This activity is carried on centrally. Cataloguers are therefore invited to send suggestions for new authority records of both accepted and variant forms, and bibliographic references currently not included in the Bibliographic Archive to the address: ic-cu.AFluoghi@beniculturali.it.
  • doublechecking, amending and updating title-place links where needed. This activity, carried on centrally by monitoring SBN links, needs the support of all cataloguers in the network, who are requested to operate on both new creations and old bibliographic records, by adding missing links and amending inaccurate ones. The guidelines for such work are available through the Guidelines for cataloguing in SBN. Rules for the treatment of information and data shared among all the types of material, Links Title-Places (in Italian).
