Working group for the cataloguing of cartographic material

In March 2018 ICCU established a working group to draft a guide on the cataloging of cartographic resources.
The implementation of the guide was felt necessary to enhance conservation and promotion of the cartographic materials hold by Italian libraries. These materials are of great importance from an historical, artistic and documentary point of view, and its cataloging is a fundamental step in preserving and disseminating the historical knowledge of our own country, as well as of the rest of the world.
Taking into account the variety and complexities of the available materials, the group is reviewing the entire typology of cartographic resources, and is establishing common cataloging rules and behaviors for the compilation of a shared catalogue. The guide is being drafted according to the latest accepted standards, such as the national code (REICAT), the ISBD consolidated edition, and the new SBN MARC protocol.
