14-18 Documents and images from the Great War

The national project  14-18 Documenti e immagini della Grande Guerra (14-18 Documents and pictures of the Great War) was launched in 2005 with the aim to create a digital archive of images of historical, documentary and artistic interest on World War I targered to  researchers, educators and citizens.

At the beginning 14-18 have gathered the so called Fondo Guerra, the bibliographic and archival fund that the National Committee for the history of the Italian Risorgimento collected at the beginning of the conflict. In the '30s this collection was divided and assigned to the following Institutes: Museo Centrale del Risorgimento, Biblioteca di Storia Moderna e Contemporanea and Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina . Successively ICCU took over the coordination of 14-18 and expanded the network of content providers that includes now 112 Italian cultural institutions and some contributes from private citizens.

This digital archive gives access to around 645,000 digital resources organized by types of materials: photographspostersbooksdiariesdossier  of soldiersprivate correspondencememorabiliatrench newspapersmapsmonuments and gravestone...

Thanks to  Europeana Collections 1914-1918, over 83,000 of these records are now in Europeana, the European platform for digital cultural content that has a thematic channel dedicated to the Great War.

14-18 Documenti e immagini della Grande Guerra gives also access to a series of virtual exhibitions on World War I, beginning with those made with free and opensource software MOVIO.
