The Working Group on Musical Materials

Following the implementation of Indice 2, which included  the merger of the Ancient Book, the Modern Book, and the Music bibliographic databases, and allows the management of new materials, including music resources, in July 2004 the SBN Management Committee established a Working Group on music materials.

This WG, coordinated by ICCU, is responsible for issues, activities, rules, etc., related to musical mate-rial, and in particular to music described in the National Library Service.

After the publication of the Guide to cataloguing in SBN. Music, the WG has publisched Music Uniform Title: Editorial Rules and then the Cataloguing Rules on Non-Published Music Resources.

The WG is now updating the Cataloguing Giudelines for SBN - Music, that need to be extended in order to apply the new rules and give the necessary indications concerning the recent developments of SBN.

Cataloguing Rules on Non-Published Music Resources
The Cataloguing Rules on Non-Published Music Resources, edited by the Working Group on music materials, are accessible online (in Italian) in the web pages of the national norms, at  http://norme.iccu.sbn.it/index.php?title=Norme_musica_non_pubblicata

The rules concern cataloguing of unpublished resources of all kinds: music manuscripts, which where already considered in the Guida alla descrizione catalografica uniforme dei manoscritti musicali (Roma, ICCU, 1984) and in the Guida a una descrizione uniforme dei manoscritti e al loro censimento (Roma, ICCU, 1990), audiovisual materials and music resources on electronic carriers.

The rules extend REICAT, particularly for the indications of chapter 6 on unpublished documents, with all possible references to the general rules, apply ISBD area 0  [https://www.ifla.org/publications/international-standard-bibliographic-description?og=628], and follow the Library Reference Model (LRM), and Records in Context (RiC-CM), a work in progress in the International Council of Archives, adopting the fundamental concepts, terminology, and relevant entities.

Entirely new are the concepts derived from LRM of manifestation singleton and the attention to the instructions regarding the production plan, that characterise unpublished resources, while cues re-garding the new entity Record Set have been drawn from RiC-CM. The indications of REICAT on filtering elements, those of ISBD concerning area 0 of the content form and media type, as well as those of RDA on carrier types have been expanded and re-elaborated in an autonomous chapter.
